Hot, Hot, Hot!!!

It's still unbelievably hot in Kyiv!! We went to Zhitomir on Saturday for Lena's mother's birthday. She wasn't feeling well but we did take Polina out for a stroll and somehow I got her to go to sleep once.

This weekend Nivki Church helped organize the twelfth annual Women's Conference. About 90 women from all over Ukraine attended this year. Darla Johnson, a former missionary in Kyiv, was the guest speaker. We enjoyed dinner with her tonight after our church service. She works in social work now and her husband Tim is taking a job soon as a developer with Habitat for Humanity.

CNN reports that Ukraine has permanently cancelled visas for citizens of the EU and Canada. There are conflicting reports about visas for US citizens. Darla says that even though she thought she had to apply (since it had been more than 6 months since she was in Ukraine), the Ukrainian embassy returned her application. She made it through passport control. We'll see if they let her leave!!

I preached tonight on remembering. Five times in Deuteronomy 8 Moses calls on Israel to remember what God has done and not to forget how God had blessed them and had disciplined. He told them not to forget God when they get to the Promised Land. He warned that "when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery."
When all your needs are met, it's simply difficult to remember the Lord and to serve him with all of your being.

I think this reality is the reason the center of Christianity is shifting from North America and Europe to South America and Africa. As wealth increased, people forgot. Possibly this is why Jesus warned us of the dangers of wealth. It seems the problem in the west is too few people realize how truly wealthy they are and what imminent danger they are in of forgeting.
