World Cup Glory Strikes!

Ukraine began its first appearance in the World Cup (a global soccer/futboll tournament that takes place every four years) disappointgly with a 0:4 loss to Spain. Minutes ago, Ukraine slammed Saudia Arabia 4:0 and I could hear fireworks being shot off in downtown Kyiv. Channel 5 was showing several of the government ministers watching the game. It was broadcast on the Inter channel but we have such bad sound on our TV--and it was in Ukrainian not Russian--I wasn't sure what was going on but we won, so I guess that's all that matters. Saudi Arabia was considered the weakest team so I am not sure how much there is to be excited about. Several church members congratulated me on the US's performance against Italy. They came to a draw but I think it surprised everyone. The US is still alive in the tournament. (I can now hear a gang of people chanting soccer chants. I guess the celebrating will go into the night.)

Tomorrow is Sergiy's last day at the UEC. I am a little somber about that. I think the transition has as gone as well as could be expected. Vitaly will just work half-time. Fortunately, the summer is slow so there is plenty of time to learn. Now, Lena and I have to take over the training for a bit till he gets the hand of financial matters, etc.

Today, in a new twist, a sign was posted on our building that the water would periodically be out. I came in, and sure enough, there was no cold hot water. But plenty of hot water. So much hot water that it nearly burns your skin. I filled up a big barrel of water so we can flush the toilet just in case. Only cold goes into the toilet.

I miss all our students who have gone to Wisconsin and other places. Since we don't have an LST team or any other visitors until July, the summer has gone by so slowly. The rain--which came back today--has made everything so dreary.

Lena is almost finished with her 3rd and 4th MBA classes. She is struggling with her group project since the group she is in (which is composed of 2 people) doesn't respond much to her emails and request for the other person to work.

We still don't have a government. I think they were too busy watching futboll to do anything. I think a coalition has to be formed by Friday or the parliament will be dissolved. I might be wrong on that.
