Chestnuts have fallen
Most of the chestnuts have fallen to earth and broken free. The "kashtani" are yellowing and it's necessary to wear a jacket everyday. Sweaters are starting to be pulled out from their few months' storage. Fall has arrived. I don't mind it that much. It means pumpkins are starting to arrive, and I do love pumpkin. Pumpkin bread and pie. Nothing like it.
We were at church a long time Sunday. I preached on Jonathan, David's friend and Saul's son. He's quite a character. Daring, courageous, faithful, faith-filled, willing to take risks. I wish I knew more about him. We then met about a small church fire and were at Globus to eat, only to be disappointed by the official closing of Rostiks chicken place. Very disappointing. We did sneak some Italian gelato; that stuff is incredible. And cheap compared to US prices. Monday we had the cell group leaders over for a planning session. White chili was on the menu. We plan to study Ecclesiastes and Solomon's life over the next few weeks. We also planned our Friday combined cell meeting.
There was some other stuff. A meeting here, a meeting there. A brief conversation. A phone call. Some emails.
I am excited that the church's ministry to orphans has really taken off. Anya Z and Nastya T and others are really working hard on that. It's great to see so many working together to help those who have no families.
So far the UEC has given away (for a donation) 68 video cassettes. We are now buying DVDs with that money. Anybody got a good movie they want to recommend, something we could lend at the UEC? It's not the easiest thing in the world. Tonight, we watched Polanski's Oliver Twist. Pretty standard interpretation but worth watching. We also recently watched An Unfinished Life which we are definitely adding to the collection. Made me, in an odd way, want to move to Wyoming.
Last month, the UEC got $445 in donations for the month, but we also had quite low attendance in September. The good weather was keeping some people away, I guess.
Thursday Lena's mom and dad are coming to begin the renovation work at the UEC. Today we were finally able to buy some speakers for the UEC, to go with the video projector the church bought. Sight and sound. I am in heaven.
Preparations are underway for the UEC's fifth anniversary. On October 4, 2001, we opened our facility near KPI though we had worked out of a dilapidated apartment near Shulyavska metro for several months. This year, we will celebrate our anniversary on October 26 with three of our board members from the US, our staff, and as many of the UEC's friends as the Center can hold. We are planning several surprises so we hope our Kyiv readers will reserve this date.
