International Women's Day
March 8th has come and gone. North America probably didn't realize this day is an important holiday. It was an official day off from work and is met with combined zeal that hovers around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day in the US. Maybe more. It is the day when all men are under obligation to congratulate most of the women in their lives with some kind of gift, often tulips or candy.
Lena and I take a "mild" approach to holidays like this. We recognize them, but usually with kind deeds rather than expensive gifts. And possibly a small token. A symbol rather than something costly. Holidays are too commercialized, and I just see no reason to support mindless consumption to somehow "prove" I love my wife. I try to do that everyday. Not just March 8.
Today we discovered a new large grocery store not too far from our house. It's somewhat a little more inconvenient but they did have lettuce so we may be going back. And by the way, I don't consider the consumption of lettuce "mindless consumption." I did make some brownies for Lena tonight and some more soda bread to go with the leftover Irish stew. Oleg came over and we started season 4 of 24 in honor of the holiday. His Oksana is flying back to Paris today and so should be there by now. She will be back to Ukraine in about 3 weeks and so I guess we will see a lot less of Oleg. Anya Shvachko also returned to the US yesterday after a long stay in Ukraine.
Last night, we had our small group over, and we cooked a nice dinner for them. Since today was a holiday, everyone was a little more relaxed and since no one had to go to work, some people didn't leave until after 11.00PM. So it was basically an all-day, all-night affair to host this group. I made soda bread and Irish stew in preparation for my St. Patrick's Day meal. I love St. Patrick. He was a great missionary. Too bad his holiday has been purloined by green beer-drinking sots. Anyway, I am perfecting the soda bread art. It's a simple, rough bread, but we like. I also have some beef currently "corning" in the refrigerator. Lena's mom, sister, and niece are coming tomorrow, so I have to be ready with a meal to celebrate Women's Day for them. We'll have corned beef and cabbage if that meat works out. If not, who knows?
Back to work tomorrow. No Student Night since most universities are closed on Friday too and they all went home.

Hi Chris and Lena - I don't know if you guys even remember me at all or not. This is Owen King hailing to you from Canada. It has been a long time, I know. I tried getting on nivkychurch.com but apparently it is not active anymore. Anyway, I just wanted to let you and anyone else there know that I got married last year and we already have a beautiful baby girl! My wife's name is Pamela and we named our daughter Janessa. I would dearly love to come back to Kyiv for a visit but that isn't likely going to happen anytime soon. Oh yeah, I just got accepted into Providence Theological Seminary where I will be pursuing a Master's of Arts in Christian Counseling. Pray that all goes well for us. Write me sometime at p.o.king@hotmail.com
God bless,
Owen
Women's Day....we might have to institute that at my house since I'm the only woman...
We'll be praying for you during your transition back to the states.
